12.2.2011, 3:17 AMBut he has a point. I mean everything that has happened has already happened, so obviously no one can go back and change it. If someone went back and stopped, say, the assassination of President Lincoln then it never would have happened, and so no one would ever go back to stop it. See what I mean? If someone was actually successful in changing events of the past then their present would never exist, thus making their presence impossible. Unless, when a change occurs, it creates an alternate timeline that exists alongside the original timeline. That way both timelines would still exist, sharing the same past until a point at which they branch off. (That point wouldn’t be the actual change, but the point at which the person appears in the past.) If the time traveler then went back in time to before that could they somehow choose which timeline to follow when they came to the point of divergence?

12.2.2011, 5:15 AMTime travel is either simply impossible or causes diverging timelines. To navigate that interdimensional travel should be possible too, though.
Utter nonsense is time "correcting itself" or "protecting important people/events". Same goes for the universe imploding if you meet a you from another time. And time travelers being protected from the changes/paradoxes they cause by a temporal bubble around them is barely a step above that.

12.21.2011, 3:43 PMYes, that's all well and good but you ignore the reality that there IS no history. Farther back than a hundred or two years, all we've got is certain people's interpretations of happenings. Farther STILL and we get modern mans interpretation of ancient man's STUFF, even worse! If you change things in a time before writen record, then is that immutable? What if I went back and assassinate a pharoah in the Old Kingdom? Will that unwrite me from history?
Or are you merely saying that the subtle change will be a world exactly like this one only where I DIDN'T decide to kill an ancient Egyptian king? Thus making the same paradox as a world where Lincoln wasn't assassinated and thus, no one goes back to save him.
What if after saving Lincoln, you write a letter to yourself instructing yourself to do so, and leave it in possession of a bank that you know will be around in your time, with the instructions to deliver it to the address where you keep your time machine in oh, 200 years?

Our Japanese 101 class was taken out to show us the library resources for foreign languages. Since I'll talk to the closest stranger when I have a joke, I turned to him and asked if this counted as a quest and whether we should have been equiped in case of random encounters. We exchanged some banter and I quoted 8-bit Theater. That's when he knew it was lurve. >.<
